Book any good?

I feel like the book was mashed unecessarily into a tiny little runtime to accomodate Hollywood's needs more than what the novel probably required to tell the story. The script seems pretty damn good, almost like a Victor Hugo plot. Anyone read this? If so, is the novel worth a read?

The book is very good. Unfortunately, like Shellabarger's other excellent historical novel "Captain from Castille", the movie treatment was good, as far as it went, but there was plenty of material for a miniseries, a form that didn't exist in the 1940s.
