Why the name "Pinky"?

I was wondering why the name of the main character was "Pinky" was this a nickname given at birth because she wasn't a dark skinned baby? Does the script give an indication to this being her actual legal name? Also the movie has a plot similar in ways to "Imitation of Life" starring Claudette Colbert.

You are right about it being about her color. As a baby she was probably very pink skinned, unusual for black babies.
