misunderstood film? SPOILERS

There used to be a lot more post about this great film?
Anyway, everytime this film is on tv in the UK critic in the paper will say it is a satire on British society after the war,a society tired of rationing and regulations and all that stuff.

But the message of the film is (I think)the opposite why?

The film starts with Pimlico (an area of London)being found to be part of France due to the discovery of an ancient treaty.
The local people seize the chance to set up their own country with no rationing and few government regulations.
But after a while they realise that the lack of controls means that corrupt and greedy people rule things, and they miss being part of a bigger society.
So they are glad when they get the chance to rejoin the rest of Britain which is fairer and under the rule of law.
Of course the film is critical of politicians and bureaucrats but it is gentle satire and the message is not very political.
