Post-production blot... what is it hiding?

At the 43 minute mark, when the Duke looks out from his bedroom window at the chaos on the streets, we see a National Benzole Mixture container, and throughout the shot a crudely drawn blob obscures something on the top of the bowser - a sign maybe?
Anyone have a clue as to what it is please?

reply

By Jove, you are right. How bizzare! I wonder what on earth it could be hiding?

reply

It appears to be a sign which reads "Black Market Petrol".

Nice one finnbarius.
I just came here to say the exact same thing after watching a HD version of the film.
As the blob moves around, you can clearly make out the hand-painted sign:
BLACK
MARKET
PETROL
and underneath
ANY QUANTITY SUPPLIED

Possibly two reasons for this:
1 - The term Black Market supposes illegality, but the Burgundians are acting legally in their own country - the goods they are selling are not rationed or taxed in their 'country', so it adds a negative feeling to what is a bit of fun.
2 - National Benzole was a real company, and perhaps they refused to be associated with an illegal activity like black market dealing.

Either way, I am glad the mystery has been solved; maybe locked away in an old filing cabinet is the reason for the redaction.

I have a HD screenshot of the sign on Photobucket, but I don't know if IMDB will let me post the link. Here it is anyway.

I wonder when it was added? At the time, or in today's overly sensitive climate?

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

reply

It's quite a primitive blot technique so it appears to be comtemporaneous.
