Did anyone else find both Stephen and Mary unattractive in appearance? Was the high contrast lighting done to make these characters, who are so unappealing--look unappealing. I was surprised to learn that "Mary" was David Lean's wife. Was this film autobiographical for Lean? Does some scholar know?
shareI agree. The actor who played Stephen had some horrible skin surface issues. I thought Mary was very plain. To their credit however, I watched this film back to back, after viewing 'Gaslight' for the 1st time. In that film, Ingrid Bergman was beautiful like an angel. It was just too much to follow that!!
We are so spoiled in that we are so used to seeing super attractive actors in films.
I found myself rooting for Claude Rains' character because he has the cutest smile, smooth handsome face, a strong jawline and those deep expressive eyes!!! I can't believe he was already 60. He was super cute.
