Twilight Zone movie (spoilers!)

To me, this movie seemed like a well-done, feature-length Twilight Zone episode. I found it interesting until the part where Orpheus couldn't look at his wife. That part of the movie was very poorly done & rather comical, like an "I Love Lucy" episode. So many absurd "oops" moments where he almost sees her. And then-- well duh, who doesn't know a car has mirrors, hello??!! And I didn't understand Orpheus' obsession with the car radio. The radio was just spouting random nonsense!!
But other than that, an interesting (if totally weird) film.

Well, if Orpheus didn't look at his wife somehow it wouldn't be the Orpheus myth anymore, would it?
As for the car radio, I wonder if it was supposed to have some sort of magical, hypnotic effect. I thought that Orpheus saying that the car radio produced the best poetry he's ever heard pretty funny.

The glance was accidental, Orpheus was in the car to hear the broadcast and entranced by it, he was thinking about the mirror and just happened to look up.

Orpheus understood if unconsciously that the radio was not a normal broadcast but something that was connected to the bizarre things he had witnessed and experienced, that's why he was obsessed - he was trying to figure it all out.

Cocteau wrote that the idea for the radio came from coded radio messages that were broadcast on French radio during the Nazi occupation. They seemed like random nonsense but were messages for the resistance fighters. (Now Cocteau could be whimsical about such things, and that may not be true, but it's what he wrote.)

"You must sing him your prettiest songs, then perhaps he will want to marry you."
