How does vote packing happen?

OK, I fit in the female, age 45-plus demographic. Here's the current breakdown of that cohort's votes for Nora Inu:

Votes Percentage Rating
11 3.9% 10
17 6.0% 9
13 4.6% 8
8 2.8% 7
4 1.4% 6
2 0.7% 5
2 0.7% 3
1 0.4% 2
227 79.6% 1

Seems impossible that 227 women in my age cohort thought this film deserved a 1 vote. So who spends the time packing the votes, and why do they bother?

I don't know the answer,
but similar vote breakdown can be also found in
Kurosawa's
Ikiru http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044741/ratings-female_age_4
High and Low http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057565/ratings-female_age_4

and Mizoguchi's
Ugetsu http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046478/ratings-female_age_4
and
Sansho the Bailiff http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047445/ratings-female_age_4

Incidentally all these films have 8.1 overall rating.

I only checked some 10 films by 2 directors, but quickly found these 4.
So maybe that cohort actually dislike these films,
for whatever the reasons.

Don't even bother trying to find credibility for the voting on imdb. It is a fool's errand.
One of the least reliable methods of determining quality in all of the nets.

Just use this site as an information source and...maybe the boards...and you'll be fine.

It's pretty obvious IMDb doesn't count all those 1's in its averaging. It recognizes users that are just scoring 1 on lots of films (to damage them) and then rejects their votes from the averaging equation.

I have found IMDb pretty accurate it its scoring. Pretty much any film with 8 or higher is good, while 7 or lower can be ignored. Ditto on other scoring systems like Yelp, Opentable, and amazon (except their scores are halved).

What a weird club. The Kurosawas I can just about understand, if somebody wants to pump up the score of Dances with Smurfs or whatever, they might vote down Shichinin no Samurai, but it seems unlikely that such a dork would even have heard of Sansho Dayu. Bizarre, ne?

If it's any solace, 100% of the females under 18 gave it a 10... So maybe in 27 years, the female 45+ cohort will undergo some radical changes...

Um, hi... this movie has a single vote from one female viewer under 18 so... you know... your "100%" is just one person... small sample size, convergence to the mean has yet to happen, blah blah blah...

wow, poupi, you're really good at statistics! jokes on the other hand...

fffffuuuuu.... I am nearing the 45 mark and am female, does this mean my brain will suddenly flip or something? This is one of my favourite films of all time, now! Who of any age would give it 1 mark I ask.

I've seen some terrible films but don't think I've ever been moved enough to rate them a one. Maybe some people are bored enough to try and make some point about films they believe they are being "forced" into liking or the feeling that it is a classic so therefore must enjoy or like. I can see why not everyone would like this film but I don't believe it's genuinely bad enough for anyone to vote it a one.

I watched flight the other day. How people are rating it an 8 or even a 10 is beyond me but no way is it a one, no matter how many flaws I think it has.

Some people seem to not realize there are ratings between 1 and 10. I suspect a lot of them are trying to achieve "justice" for a film they think is either rated too high or too low, so they vote it a 1 or 10 (which obviously has the biggest effect on the overall rating). Realistically I think there aren't many films deserving of a 10, and even fewer that are deserving of a 1.

This certainly wasn't one of my favorites (even among Kurosawa's films), but I just don't see how anyone in their right mind could give it a 1.

reply

I know exactly what you mean. I don't even give films that I loathe a 1. 1s for me are reserved for films that are pathetically amateur to the point where they're laughable. I would give troll 2 a 1. How anyone could rationalize giving anything as professionally made as this anything lower than a 3, I really can't understand.

My theory in rating....

My most disliked movie - gets a 1
Movie with no plot and brutal - 2
Lousy movie or brutally boring with little purpose but with a plot - 3
Movie not really worth spending the time to watch unless nothing else to do - 4
OK movie worth watching but a little forgettable - 5
Decent movie but doesn't WOW me - 6
Good movie, sometimes an average movie with a great performance - 7
Excellent movie that I consider a must watch - 8
Movie that should be in or close to top 50 all-time - 9
I don't rate 10s on my personal sheet, but I have put maybe about my top 10 as 10's on here

% wise it comes to about
1 - one piece of garbage
2 - 1%
3 - 5%
4 - 5%
5 - 15%
6 - 30%
7 - 25%
8 - 15%
9 - 3%
10- 1%
