the heat

I was impressed by the use of the hot weather in the film. It was well done and became a big factor. Would love to hear someone analyze this.

Cool, irradiata! Nice job.

I noticed the rain coming to signal the climax, too. It also played a nice little part in catching the crook from mud on his pants.

When I last watched the Seven Samurai DVD I listened to part of the commentary and the artificial rain was covered. Great commentary, but I didn't finish. It's a long movie!

Haven't seen that one.

* just today finished the best (for me) Kurosawa film yet: Red Beard! I rented it and Stray dog the same day. Saw Stray Dog and then Red Beard. It was amazing. So touching. It was Kurosawa's last black and white film. Have you seen that one?

I was comparing directors recently on how their movies were rated on IMDb. By at least some measures, Kurosawa rated the highest. I also looked at Scorcese, Hitchcock, Spielberg, Kubrick and a few others.

I'll put a new topic on the "General" board to cover some results. I'll put a link to it here.

yes I posted info on comparing directors there. A little later I also discovered that Masaki Kobayashi had incredibly high ratings here on IMDb. I posted his stats there, too.

I haven't seen any of his films yet, but I must try that.

Getting back to Kurosawa, how about the heat in I Live in Fear? It seems to me to echo the Mifune character's fear of a bomb blast; especially during the thunderstorm. And the tension between all the family members is exacerbated because they are all so hot and uncomfortable.

I agree, it was a major part of the film and made it more "uncomfortable" for the characters

Unfortunately chunks of this thread have disappeared with deletions. The heat is a feature and 'character' in the film. Of course, as noted, the rain is the climax but it also brings relief in various ways. For me the heat culminates with Harumi in the dress bought from Yusa's proceeds of crime, even though it had started to rain at that point. The heat is not only thematic; it adds tremendous atmosphere. One can feel things beginning to boil.

Hi Poppy,
Good post. Haven't seen the movie for maybe nine years and remember it only vaguely. I remember liking it a lot.

it was indeed brilliant, he managed to make something so mundane (weather) and make it into a memorable asset of the movie
