Criterion DVD?

I know this film was released on Criterion Collection Laserdisc. Does anyone know of a possible DVD release? Beacause this film is my favorite Kurosawa flick.

reply

It hasn't been released and is not on their schedule, but Criterion holds rights to all the Kurosawa through Dodes ka'den, from 1970, so I would expect to see a restored reissue within the next few years. Thus far they've released Red Beard, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High & Low, Hidden Fortress, Throne Of Blood, Seven Samurai and Rashomon, the next scheduled released is (Jan 2004) Ikiru. I know their releases of Dodes ka'den and Sanshiro Sugata were delayed indefinitely due to "problems with (film) elements," and an announced release of Lower Depths has alsbo been delayed.

Where did you read that?

reply

In the notes to Throne of Blood, Linda Hoaglund (the translator) writes that Criterion has commissioned her to write new subtitles for seven Kurosawa films. They are:

(Already released)
Seven Samurai
Ikiru
Throne of Blood

(To be released)
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well
Drunken Angel
I Live in Fear

At least we know they're on the way!
I'd be willing to bet at least one or two of the to-be-released films will come out within 2004. All we can do is hope!

YES YES YES!! I have been waiting for a decent edition of Drunken Angel- it's Kurosawa's first film with Mifune; they should have put that out before STray Dog due to the significance of that fact, but I have really been looking forward to Stray Dog.

Is the criterion DVD region 1 or 0?

reply

Old thread, I know, but the Criterion release is most definitely Region 1.
