What year did Mighty Joe Young first air on TV ?

I think it was '56 or '57---------anyone here old enough to remember ?

56 or 57 sounds about right. I first saw it in the theaters in 1953 when I was 10. It was re-released around that time. They did that a lot back then. And you also got TWO movies for about 15 cents. I remember complaining when it went up to about 25 cents about 3 or 4 years later because it used up my allowance money too fast. Anyhow, I seem to recall seeing it on TV about 3 or so years after the 53 re-release.

I'm 39 So of course I wasn't born yet, I remember when I lived in New York on thanksgiving day WWOR Channel 9 would show all three movies KING KONG, SON OF KONG and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. I now live in florida and I seen KING KONG once while down here. It was like tradition to me and I miss it. I own the movies on DVD but it's not the same. I would eat thanksgiving meal and after finishing, I would run to my grandmothers living room and dive on the floor and wait until the came on, usually after macy's thanksgiving day parade.

You would complain about 15 an 25 cent movies??? Do you know what the prices are now?? I just recently went and it was $7.50 and that was the matinee. I complain when I have to go to a dollar theatre. That's when I miss the regular run of the movie I want to see.

It first aired in Los Angeles in 1958 on KHJ Channel 9. I think KHJ and WWOR were owned by the same people, at one time.

WAPA-TV, Puerto Rico, had a great show on Sunday afternoons of the late 50s and early 60s, LA PREMIERE DEL MAS ALLA, which ran horror and scifi movies. It was there that I first saw such classics as the Universal horror films of the 30s and 40s, THEM!, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and the movies of Corman and Harryhausen, including MJY.
I wish I could watch that show again, because it really was like SYFY in miniature.
