Was Joe supposed to be an "ordinary" but huge gorilla, or a mutant, or a throwboack to some extinct ape species, or what? Because his size bore no relation to the size of real gorilla; I can hardly believe the makers of the movie didn't know that he was way too big for a normal ape.

I think if they did go with the size of a normal Gorilla. It really wouldn't have been as impressive. Personally i think Joe was on steroids. Lots and Lots of Steroids.
