The Wrestlers

All the wrestlers in the nightclub scene were professionals who wrestled from the '30's to the 50's. I don't have the order of appearance correct, but here they are: Sammy Stein, Slammin' Sammy Meneker, Max the Iron Man, Bomber Kulky, Killer Karl Davis, Rasputin the Mad Russian, The Swedish Angel, Wee Willie Davis, Man Mountain Dean, and Primo Carnera.

Willie Davis and Dean made several cameos in films, and Kulky had a good career as a supporting player in TV, most notably in Life of Riley, Hennessey, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Carnera had been the World Heavyweight Boxing champ, the biggest in terms of height and weight in history until Vladimir Klitchko.

This is my favorite scene in the movie, thanks for the info!

The gorilla still made a monkey out of them!

Its that man again!!

The Swedish Angel was more frightening than Mighty Joe Young himself!

The good news: not a steroid among them.

I love it when, after the tug-of-war, the anchor wrestler gets thrown from the stage into the audience and lands on a table that then collapses with customers a foot away. Imagine the lawsuits if that happened today (in real life or in movie life).

Yeah, the Swedish Angel was ugly--with that bald head! And he broke a 4x4 over it!

Primo Carnera was a big draw at the Wrestling events into the 1950s. He came to London's Harringay Arena in one of Atholl Oakley's promotions in May 1952 and "fought" for the "Official Eliminating contest for the World's Heavyweight Championship" against the former Irish heavyweight boxer Joe Doyle (1913-1978).

I have the programme from that night, passed down in the family, which Carnera had signed twice.

Every third person who complains will be shot. Two people have complained already!

You could have noted what the wrestlers did:
1. Sammy Stein--broke a chain.
2. Karl "Killer" Davis--bent a crowbar.
3. Ivan Rasputin ("The Mad Russian")--broke manacles on his wrists.
4. Henry Kulky ("Bomber")--Lifted big barbells.
5. Sammy Menacker ("Slammin' Sammy")--tore a telephone book in two.
6. Ian Batchelor ("Max the Iron Man')--bent a railroad spike.
7. William "Wee Willie" Davis ("He's got fur!")--bent a long steel rod behind his head.
8. Man Mountain Dean--bent a horseshoe.
9. Phil Olafsson ("The Swedish Angel")--broke a 4x4 over his bald head.
10. Primo Carnera--flexed his biceps and snapped metal bands off them.
When my brother and sister and I were kids, our Dad broke a horseshoe in two--with his bare hands.
