Jimmie Stewart's character
My grandfather's name is John Royer. Way to go.
shareWas he born in Lansing and go to the University of Michigan too?
shareNo he was born in southern Lancaster County, PA , July 17, 1911. Went as far as 8th grade.
shareThe movie character clearly was from Michigan. My own grandfather was from the York / Hanover area, born in 1894, he taught school there in the teens before he became a missionary in Japan, maybe they met.
shareMy grandfather lived in Ephrata, PA most of his life and worked at Lukens Steel in Coatesville, PA. He died September 14, 1997. There are tons of Royers I can trace my Royers back to Sebastian Royer. They may have known each other, and your grandfather is John Royer, too? My Dad was Donald Royer, before he passed away he was a retired realtor in York and also worked at Market Motors on East Market Street near the Volkswagen dealership.
shareNo Royer's in my family that I know of, the name was Nace. Our family legacy farm from the 1730's is now at the bottom of a man-made lake to supply water for Washington and Baltimore.
Still a common name in those parts, but I don't know any of them. My grandpa moved out 100 years ago to be a preacher in Japan — he had 23 brothers and sisters, the family just kind of multiplied. Back then the Pennsylvania farmers didn't have slaves, they had children instead.
