I remember when I was growing up during the 70's as a kid and then in the early 80's a station out of St. Louis, Missouri use to show Ma and Pa Kettle movies on the weekends! It was great and I loved watching these types of movies! The last time I saw a Ma and Pa Kettle movie must have been when The Family Channel was still known as regular Family Channel before it changed to Fox Family Channel, and now currently ABC Family Channel.

I cannot wait to receive these classic movies from Netflix for me to enjoy watching! It is on my list of movies to watch!

Do I know you, RobBase???? Just joking, but I too grew up watching Ma and Pa Kettle (along with Abbott and Costello, Francis the Talking Mule, etc.) on Channel 11 out of St. Louis during the 70's and 80's! I guess we spent our Saturdays the same way! Those were the days!

I also remember the the Family Channel when it showed great classics. *sigh*

I don't know if I know either of you two but I also grew up in IL. I lived in Rochelle when I was a kid. I think the 70's was the tail end of TV's Golden Age myself. Practically nothing that was on back then is still on the air anymore and it's quite sad. Most times I either read, watch DVD's or listen to my MP3's of Old Time Radio programs. As old as the OTR shows are they have a whole lot more entertainment value than most of what is on TV now days. It is getting so the only way to get good entertainment for the TV (like the Ma and Pa Kettle movies) is to buy them on DVD. Certainly the people running the TV stations aren't broadcasting them. And so much of what is on TV now seems like cookie cutter programming. Same stories with differently named (but otherwise identical) characters in a different setting. Where's the imagination? And forget 'reality' tv. If I want reality all I have to do is look out the nearest window. Give me good old fashioned entertainment like when I was a kid anytime.

I grew up in Decatur, Illinois which is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours away from St. Louis. It all depends on how fast you drive really because I can get there in like 2 hour time without any problems at all. Yes it is sad all right about how programming has gone to crap on TV it seems like. Now I do catch every once in a while on THIS TV them showing Ma and Pa Kettle films though. I just bought the complete collection and enjoyed watching it on DVD. THIS TV will show a variety of the older films that we all like including some of the Abbott and Costello films, Don Knotts films, and some other good stuff that I remember catching off of the Late, Late Movies shown on WCIA Channel 3 which I think is out of Champaign, Illinois. I do not care for some of the junk that they show now and will watch other things on TV. I miss the late night weekends of USA UP ALL NIGHT or Monster Vision to be honest with you. When I was stationed up at Great Lakes for the Navy 10 years ago 780 WBBM AM would have tons of great radio shows that more than likely my grandparents and my father listened to along with my fathers brother. It was great to hear The Lone Ranger and some other classic radio shows broadcasted once again to listen to. I like a little of everything and wished someone would create a network that would show a variety of things to watch for all ages. AMC use to be a very good network to watch and now they show nothing but crap on there anymore. I guess the time of good programming is dead I hate to say it.

A few years ago I emailed KPLR TV Channel 11 out of St. Louis, Mo. and asked them why they changed their programming and from what they told me was that they wanted to give people more entertainment and things better to watch.

See what they did was sell out to at that time the WB network which almost a lot of networks were doing. That really made me mad because some of the WB programming I did not care to watch I hate to say it. I then implied to them that if a programming executive from this network or that network was to jump off of a bridge for ratings would you guys do the samething to get the ratings?

They did not reply back to me at all about that question and more than likely thought I was nuts. LOL I just wanted a direct answer to my question you know. That is how I think sometimes and will ask people questions to find out my answers to what I am asking.

I just thought I would let you know about this sharonshay.

Thanks for letting me know. It is very disappointing that future generations can't grow up on some of the neat stuff we did. I'm glad you emailed them and gave them food for thought.

PS. I grew up in Fairview Hgts.

I grew up in Decatur, Illinois.

Yes it is a shame that they altered their programming to be more like everyone else! I cannot stand that. Even USA Network did that as well and look at the kind of stuff they are showing now on USA Network! They are showing the same crime and drama shows as everybody else is which I hate!

They did ruin future generations I hate to say it. I now live in Kenosha, Wi.

I did not tell you what KPLR TV Channel 11 told me what they did with all of those great classic movies that they had or use to show! They sold them all away to other channels and networks.

They should have kept all of those movies and The Three Stooges in my honest opinion because what if people did not like what they were showing and decided to not watch their channel anymore? Then they are screwed you know!

Well what made me mad was that my local cable company got rid of KPLR TV Channel 11 to go with TBS and TNT 20 years ago it will be 21 years coming up on January 1 of 2009.I was so pissed about that!

It's getting to the point that programming is so unbearable that all I can do is buy all the classic tv shows and movies on dvd. I just got some Shirley Temple dvds today, which I also used to be able to watch on regular TV once upon a time!

I live in OH now, but was visiting family in IL this summer. I was at Wal-Mart buying a season of the 3 Stooges and the cashier was so happy to see me buying that dvd. She kept talking about all the great old movies KPLR TV Channel 11 used to show. It was fun reminiscing.

I cannot believe Channel 11 got rid of those movies. And as far as your cable station getting rid of KPLR to go with TBS and TNT, that just stinks!

I'll be watching "Ma And Pa Kettle At Home" tonight. I watch it every year at Christmas time because, as I'm sure you know, the movie ends with it being Christmas. I'll toast one to you!

Yes programming is so unbearable these days that I do not watch what the main networks show because all they show now is some awful things now. WOW Shirley Temple was also another thing shown a lot on the weekends when I was growing up as a kid! That is great that you just bought some Shirley Temple DVD's!

COOL That you live in Oh now. That is cool that you were visiting family in Illinois this past summer. I bet the cashier was so happy to see you buying that DVD of The Three Stooges! I bet she did talk about a lot of the great programming that KPLR TV Channel 11 use to have. I bet it was fun reminiscing about it.

I know what you mean! I cannot believe Channel 11 got rid of all of those great classic movies as well. Yes it did stink when the local cable company down in Decatur, Illinois went with TBS and TNT. I hated it and was very pissed about it for quite sometime. I even called the local cable company when I lived in Decatur and asked them when they were going to bring back KPLR TV Channel 11 and the lady said a lot of people have been asking for it back but they never brought that network back at all.

Great! Have fun watching "Ma And Pa Kettle At Home"! Thanks for the toast! I appreciate that a lot!

I remember them being on TV back then too. Ma and Pa would be on for several weeks then it would switch to Sherlock Holmes and then Charlie Chan before Ma and Pa would be back on the air again. They don't make comedies like they used to anymore. Kinda sad really. The whole 10 movie series is now out in a DVD set with 2 movies on each disc. I picked up a set a few weeks ago for under $15.00 at Wal-Mart.

Man I remember watching all of those films back in the day and then also they would show also on TV as well was the old Tarzan movies. It was a great time in my childhood to grow up watching classics like this. I even remember watching The Three Stooges films with Curly Joe in them. Those were some great times. Yeah I picked up several months ago the DVD box set from my local Walmart as well. I was so excited to get them to watch all of the films. No they do not make films like this anymore these days. I am surprised that no film writer has tried to do like a remake of the film of any of the Ma and Pa Kettle films done the same way as the original where the father is very laid back and always says, "I will get to it one of these days." In his rocking chair smoking a pipe. That would be awesome to see in my opinion on the big screen with a large family of kids too.
