'Hey, are we playin' the same thing?'

Marx fans tend to get so grumpy about this movie, but it's really quite good. It's definitely up to par with their post-Day at the Races work (and better than The Big Store, I think). It's not really a "proper" Marx Brothers movie because it was supposed to be Harpo's starring vehicle. Groucho's on the sidelines, but so what? He couldn't have added much to this story anyway. And save his "monk" bit in The Story of Mankind, Chico uses this film to bow out gracefully from cinema. (Watch the violin/piano duet sequence and tell me he wasn't just as funny as his brothers!)

I'm sure I'm not alone in my feelings. No, this isn't a good "Marx Brothers" film, but it is an excellent Harpo and Chico Marx film, and deserves a lot more credit than it gets.

You're absolutely right. If you just think of it as a Chico-Harpo movie, then it's a great watch. The Groucho bits were funny too and didn't distract much, but Harpo really shines here. The bit in the park where he takes his eyes out and all his clever gadgets like the extending hand at the end are really funny.
Chico of course is amazing too. I really like the plumber line and the ending in Groucho's office. I might had to import it from the USA but it was definitly worth it. (Europe didn't get a dvd release of LH and got screwed out of Room Service in the MGM box)

If you go into this with the right frame of mind it's honestly funny and good. Especially if you're burned out in the 'classics.' I feel almost the same for Groucho's 'Copacabana.'

I LOVE "Copacabana."

As soon as it came out on DVD, I bought it off e-bay.
