Produced by Mary Pickford ?

She was a silent movie star in the 10s and 20s. Does someone know how she became a producer of Love Happy?

I guess it has to do with the fact that Pickford (among Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith) was one of the founders of United Artists, the company that produced Love Happy.

Thanks! You're right that makes sense.

Yeah, Mary financed the movie, but the producer spent all of it before it could be completed. And I guess there was no more dough coming from Mary, so someone (maybe Harpo, whose idea this story was in the first place) came up with the idea for paid product placement within the context of the story. It may not have been the first time it had happened- most studios at the time had sufficient budgets that allowed for overruns if a movie took longer than it should have to shoot. But not this time, which explains why you see Kool Cigarettes and Mobil Gas logos on screen. They paid to have the movie plug their products within the context of the story, with Harpo as the ad man, a role he would ironically play on TV throughout the 50s.

Mary Pickford was a smart businesswoman and one of the founders of United Artists.

I think Ms. Pickford's subsequent reaction to the movie was, as William K. Everson in "The Marx Brothers at the Movies" recounts, when asked about the film, " 'Love' WHAT?".

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"
