My favorite moment is the Tutsi Frutsi icecream routine from A Day at the Races

Actually......on the second watch, the rating is justified. This is Groucho's best performance, and the script is fantastic. The reason why I didnt like it as much was because it was driven more by dialogue more than the ridiculous slapstick and punnery of Duck Soup, Night At The Opera and Day At The Races. Also, when you watch something when you are sleepy, you tend not to pay as much attention to detail.
Because I like Chico better than Groucho, and Chico has no funny lines in Room Service and bunches of them in Love Happy. Actually, I think that Love Happy was just an overall better movie than both Room Service and The Big Store. Why?
Because - I - just - do.
"And now, I'm going back in the closet...where men are empty overcoats..."
I see. I didnt know it was because of a particular character. I thought Harpo was weak in "Love Happy" because he would have benefited from the support of Chico and Groucho more. I dont think he can do it all himself. He needs props, and other characters to play off in order for his jokes to be effective.
I agree; I think Harpo was definitely weaker in Love Happy than most of his other films, but I think he was weakest in Room Service. That script was adapted from a Broadway play, and there was originally no character for Harpo, so he was just sort of shoehorned into it. He only pops in now and again, and the schtick he's working with just isn't up the par (That little squeaking baby-doll thing just seems pointless). I far prefer seeing him riding the Mobil pegasus, and sticking a string of sausage up the nose of a guy in a bull costume, in Love Happy. (That's just me, of course.)

IMHO, Harpo is good in Love Happy. Maybe not as good as in the others, but he is good. There are other people around him who helps the gags work (especially the bad guys).
Having watched all the Marx Bros. movies over the past few months, I'll say that my favorite Marx Brox. film is "Duck Soup" and least favorite is "Go West."
It's too hard to put them all in order (best to worst). But, I did like their first ones with Irving Thalberg at MGM. And, I think "At the Circus" is underrated. I really enjoyed a lot of scenes in that movie including the visit to the midget's private car on the train and the song Lydia the Tattooed Lady.

I'm more fond of the MGM films, because they're more sketch-oriented, whereas the George Kaufman-esque plays are a little more like actual plays. They make it more difficult to fast-forward through the love story, which is ABSOLUTELY essential when watching Go West or At the Circus. Or any of the films, really, in my personal opinion.
The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers were co-written by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind for Broadway, and they also adapted them for the screen. They also wrote the script for A Night at the Opera.
The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers and Duck Soup were filmed at Paramount Studios. Then the Marxes moved to MGM and made A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races.
They were loaned out to RKO-Radio Pictures in 1938 to make Room Service, then came back to MGM to make At the Circus, Go West and The Big Store. Their final two films, A Night in Casablanca and Love Happy, were released through United Artists Pictures.
Hope there's some information in there you can use!

I thought The Cocoanuts was filmed on a stage in New York?

Yes, both Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers were filmed in New York studios. I suppose I should've said the first five were "released through" Paramount. But Monkey Business, Horse Feathers and Duck Soup were all filmed in California.

A Day at the Races is really underrated. Most people only think of A Night at the Opera being any good when they talk about the MGM films, but I thought "Races" was a classic as well. The Paramount films are classics, of course. At the Circus and Casablanca weren't great but they were still pretty funny. I had a tough time ranking The Big Store, Love Happy, and Go West since I think they're all equally good (not that great, but they all had their moments). Room Service was the worst.

On a personal note I think I like the Big Store more than your average Bros. fan. For the life of me I don't understand how some Marx Bros' fans can think it's 'bad' at all.

I don't know what it is about The Big Store, but some people just love it. Personally, I find a lot of it tedious, though I wouldn't part with the scene in Groucho's office, and the Chico-Harpo piano number. But I'm a minority of one in my family on this issue. My children put it among their favorites, and have probably seen it more than any other Marx Brothers film. My wife also reports it was her favorite when she was growing up, and her parents like it too -- maybe it's a genetic thing. I suppose I should just be thankful to have married into a family of committed Marxists. (And I'm not just referring to the Brothers Marx -- my wife has some relatives who were leading Communists in the 40s and 50s.)

Duck soup is my idea of pure, unadulterated Marx Bros. with too many hilarious scenes to recount. A Night at the Opera is just a hair below that. I actually rank Horse Feathers and Monkey Business as pretty close to a tie. I love Thelma Todd. What can I say?
I've seen Animal Crackers less than the others, except A Night in Casablanca. I rank it about equally with the previous two, but upon further review, I might raise it to a higher ranking. A Day at the Races is about a real too long, and although Ivie Anderson is one of my favorite singers, that whole sequence could have been eliminated.
Go West is marred by two things: stretching legs and Groucho yelling "Timber!" About the only thing that saves A Night in Casablanca for me is the Frank Tashlin gag of Harpo actually holding up the building. At the Circus has Groucho singing Lydia the Tatooed Lady and not much more going for it.
Somebody mentioned how annoying the doll was in Room Service. I crack up every time I hear the repeated "Ah..." from the doctor and the "Ma" from the doll. I guess I'm easily amused. It's a shame that the likes of Lucille Ball and Ann Miller were completely wasted in this movie.
Love Happy is supposed to be a tour de force for Harpo, I guess. It didn't work. As for The Big Store, exactly what do the gags have to do with the Marx Bros. brand of comedy. MGM obviously didn't know what to do with them.

The first 5 are so close to me that order doesn't matter that much.
I just finished Love Happy for the first time last night and while it is decent it really felt like Marx Brother's lite.
