Favorite of the March girls

Who was your favorite of the four March girls. My favorite has been, and always will be, Beth. She reminds me of myself, because not only am I a naturally shy quiet person, but my name is Elizabeth and I play the piano. My next favorite would be Jo, because she reminds me of my sister Jennifer. I like Meg, but I didn't really care for Amy. She was a little too stuck up for my taste. What about the rest of you?
~Elizabeth

My favourite is Jo, she's funny and so full of character. She's bursting with life and enthusiasm. I think I probably identify with her because I was a tomboy as a youngster. But Beth comes a close second because she's just so sweet, I can't help but love her. I don't care for Amy at all. She's brattish and vain, although she does improve as she gets older. I'm not that keen on Meg either, but to be fair to her, I think she probably feels that as she is the eldest, she has to be something of a role model to her siblings.

My favourite is Amy, played by Elizabeth Taylor. Have to say, she reminds me of myself a little lol.

I loved Meg, because I love Janet Leigh. She's so beautiful!

Hm. What an interesting question... I have 3 sisters, so there is 4 of us and we always identified with one of the characters.. In the movie since Beth was the youngest and shy, I was usually compared to her.. My older sister always compared with Jo since she was a tomboy. I always got the feelings too that Jo and Beth were the closest of the sisters and we are the closest too. Then my vain sister compared with Amy (but not anymore) and then my oldest sister only compared with Meg since she was the oldest, not personality wise... Now I think I compare partly with all the characters, but I'm like Jo in the sense that I don't want our lives to change...

Anyway, my favorite character is Beth :)

favorite definitely Jo. One of my teachers actually made me sit down and read the book because I was so similar to Jo. It was wierd though, because I was often compared to Beth because of my shyness as a little kid. I love Amy, too. She's so naive and so much like my sister, but not a bad person, just materialistic. My least favorite is Beth. She's a great person, but she's doomed to die because she's so good. All characters that good die. I'm not trying to be mean, just making an observation.

When I was younger I identified mostly with Meg, because I was the oldest of three girls and, being a teenager when I first read the story, was in a highly romantic mood all the time; Meg's grown-up romance with Mr. Brooke seemed to be my hopes for my future spelled out by one Louisa May Alcott. Janet Leigh is gorgeous, as always, in the film version, but a bit too cautious for me now that I'm older and, if anything, not so stuffy and grown up.
That said, I have always loved Jo and her refusal to adhere to "elegant society" and the proper dress, manners, and social role that were expected of a young lady of her era. She has a fiery spirit, an inestimably kind, soft heart, and always seems to put others before her. I also used to write furiously as a teenager, scribbling and doodling and sketching and writing great lurid tales of romance that only a 13-year-old could write.
I was never much of a June Allyson fan (and I particularly dislike her paired with Peter Lawford), but this movie truly made me respect and love her as an actress and a screen presence. She absolutely embodies Jo March with every ounce of her being from beginning to end of the film - I was struck by how much I wanted to sit down and pore over Little Women again, inspired by Allyson's intense and exact portrayal. This has become an instant Christmas classic for me.

I liked Amy. Thats my name, lol, and I am a bit like her.

I would die for a sister like Beth or Jo (i don't have sisters, sadly, so I'm allowed to say that). June Allyson imbued Jo with such feeling and sincerity that I became her No. 1 fan right after seeing the movie. No one has been Jo for me since I saw Allyson (except maybe Winona Ryder). Margaret O'Brien is excellent and has never failed to make me cry in this film. At first I would cry when she died, but now that I've numbed to that slightly, I always tear up when she goes to thank Mr. Laurence!! SUCH A SWEETHEART!!

I love Meg. Mainly b/c I love Janet Leigh, and I love the part with her and Mr. Brooke, when they are in the doorway and he asks her to marry him.

reply

Got to be Jo. I wish i was her!! She's so fun and energetic but caring and strong at the same time. Every girl wishes they were, or had a sister, like Jo. But then Beth is amazing, she's so heartwarming and sweet. If i could, id be a mix of them both!
This film has utter magic, i love it and dislike the Winona Ryder version of Little Women.
Just another thing, why do they make Amy older than Beth, its just silly, including in this film!!! Haven't they ever read the book???!!!!
R.I.P June Allyson.

I think MGM did it so they could put Margaret O'Brien in the most sympathetic role of Beth. I saw this movie before I read the book, so I thought it was perfect that way. Now I can see how that might bother some people, though.

...and in conclusion, I would like to say that James Dean and Leo Gorcey are very hot.

Of course Jo. I just love the way June Allyson voice is and how she is Jo. I love it when she meets Mr. Lawrence - "I do. I really like you!"

That is such a tough question. Because my fav. scene of the whole movie is when Beth receives the piano from Mr. Lawrence. Makes me cry everytime. But I would probably identify with Jo the most.

reply

My favourite was Beth, followed by Jo. I didn't really feeel as much for the other two sisters. I also think the change in ages between Beth and Amy was a little silly as in films characters play different to their own ages all the time. And it was also before the concept of the teenager/youngster movies hit hollywood.

My favourite has got to be Jo, I have been a June Allyson fan as long as i can remember! Then followed by Beth, she was such a sweet little girl, I cried when she died.

My favorite is definetly Jo. I, like her, want to be a writer, I used to be a bit of a tomboy too when I was younger, and I am a feminist like her. Next comes Beth, then Meg. I never cared too much Amy though. When I first saw the movie, she annoyed me; know I just think she's stuck up in the beginning. But anyway, Jo was my favorite and always will be.

Being one of four sisters myself I always said each of my sisters was one of the characters. I always said I was like Beth (because Im shy and love music) but my favourite like most people, is Jo. This film is my favourite of all time, I love it so much! Unfortunately I can't get it on dvd in the uk, but I have my faithful tape of it recorded by my lovely Grandma who first introduced me to the film!

reply

I liked Meg the best.

It's an interesting psychological phenomenon.

OMGosh are u kidding? I can't choose. They were ALL my favorites, I thought they were pretty much all perfect. That's why the 1949 version is my definite favorite of the versions. The only thing I can decide on is that Meg is usually not my favorite as a character, although I hesitate to say that because Janet Leigh played her perfectly and I don't want to slight her a bit.

I guess I would also settle on choosing Jo, and I think it's because I just think June Allyson, bless her heart, had such a challenge to overcome: she had to out-act or at least perform comparably to Hepburn's Jo. And I think she hit a homerun outa the park. In fact, I went back and re-viewed Hepburn's performance and thought it was totally over-acted at every turn once I saw Allyson's interpretation.

The 1949 has long been THE one for me. There's a handful of scenes I always recall fondly: the top one being the scene on the stairs at the Lawrence's party, Beth and Amy and Mr. Lawrence. "Isn't he perfectionary?" OMG, that's my favorite line and the writing in that scene is so touching and cute. And how O'Brien's little face comes forward through the banister garland -- wow!

Then of course I love the scene between Jo and Laurie at Meg's wedding reception. OH! Don't tell him you don't love him, Jo! NO! Every single time I get suckered into hoping she will "know". See, I think she really finally discovered she loved him but that she made her bed and would have to live in it, because her loved ones meant so much to her.

I thought Rossano Brazzi did as well as he could, but I didn't care much for him. I didn't care for the dude in the Hepburn version, either.
