DEAD RINGER

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Adele Jergens is a dead ringer for Virginia Mayo? In fact, the first time I saw the movie I complained to a relative that I thought casting Ms. Mayo as Marilyn Monroe's mother was stretching the age thing just a little too much -- then I realized by looking at the credits that it wasn't her.

reply

Absolutely. Just saw Ladies of the Chorus, and for the first few minutes of watching I was trying to figure out why she looked so familiar, since I haven't seen a lot of movies with Adele Jergens. Then it hit me--Virginia Mayo! Especially in profile.

reply

hah yeah many people make that mistake. Including me. I just talked with a friend about how virginia was so stunning in the movie. Until i just saw the credits and noticed it's not virginia but adele playing Mae :p

reply

I agree. Maybe they were twins separated at birth. ;)

This is also very funny because besides thinking how different Marilyn Monroe's voice was in this movie (pre-Marilyn Monroe persona)- I also really noticed also that her mother does look EXACTLY like Virginia Mayo and I thought it was the funniest thing to come on here and see that someone else also thought the same thing about her- I was really thinking it had to be Virginia Mayo but that it was stupid to try to play off Virginia Mayo as Marilyn Monroe's mother because of the close age difference.

reply

Adele Jergens was only 9 years older than Marilyn, even though she played her mother.

reply

Yes, I agree I couldn't get past the idea that Adele Jergens looked exactly like Virginia Mayo. I bet it presented with problems since they were the same age, worked during the same years and both were song and dance ladies.

There is indeed a very strong resemblence between Adele and Virginia although I think Adele was a bit more beautiful and had a much lovelier speaking voice and better figure. Columbia gave Adele a modest buildup at the time of 1945's A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS but after that pretty much limited her to B pictures.

reply

Harlow, I also agree on the strong resemblance, and perhaps Adele might have a lovelier voice. But Virginia Mayo has a spectacular figure. Check her out in The Girl from Jones Beach, or her dancing number with Jimmy Cagney towards the end of The West Point Story. Va Va Voom.
