Season's Greetings!

The House of David was a traveling baseball team known for the facial hair on all of the players. They were named and intended to appear somewhat as orthodox Jews.

The House of David was a Christian sect founded about 100 years ago. The members grew long beards and hair in deference to an edict in Leviticus 19:27: “You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.” They adopted certain Jewish customs, were very ascetic and also felt their appearance made them feel in touch with Jesus who as a Jewish man of his times appeared as such.

Eventually they took to baseball as a past time, became quite proficient and toured facing teams around the nation. They also felt that their skill and popularity would serve as a recruiting tool. Using the name House of David and always wearing long type beards, many people assumed they were Jewish, but they weren't. Seeing how much of Christianity came from Judaism has to really make one wonder why Christians promulgated and accepted anti-Semitism.

In any case since that time when a baseball player decides to wear a long beard, he can expect that a reference to the House of David may be coming his way.
