This had to be one of the greatest performances in film history and it is universally looked over for whatever outrageous reason is beyond me

Hi,
I really love this movie. Have seen it several times in the last few years.
I have a great respect for the late Actor Juano Hernandez.
As far as his performance as Oscar material for this movie...well that's really
subjective. But in addition to this movie there are two others that I find his contribution to be equally compelling.
They are, St. Louis Blues w/Nat King Cole, Ruby Dee, Juano, & Eartha Kitt.
And one of my alltime favorites, "Young Man with A Horn w/Kirk Douglas,
Juano Hernandez, Doris Day, Lauren Bacall, Hoagy Carmichael and some fantastic music to boot!
One thing that I have also noticed about the wonderful Mr. Hernandez is that I
cannot recall any roles that he played that were not degnified in their nature and content. A Lifetime Achiever for all time. God rest em'

I have seen all of the movies you listed, and Mr. Hernandez was absolutely dynamic in each one of them.

A very intense and mysterious personna he brings
to each of his roles.

A very dignified and no nonsense type of actor. He was very serious about his craft, and you knew it as soon as you started to watch him in a scene.

I agree. He should have got the best best actor award or at least best supporting actor award. The winner of best actor that year was Broderick Crawford for All the King's Men and the best supporting role went to Dean Jagger in Twelve O'Clock High. Mr. Crawford and Mr. Jagger were great in their movies but Juana who didn't even get nominated was much more deserving of the oscar that year. His performance was brilliant.

He always turns in a great performance. I also loved him in "Ransom" with Glenn Ford. He played the role of the servant with such dignity and grace.

I agree with you. It felt like life, no over acting to make a point.

Late reply but I agree, he should have been nominated for the Oscar, but 1949 was too early.

There were acknowledgements, in supporting roles. Unless you mean the category, then yes, we would wait until 1958 for a Black male to receive recognition.

Hi first-things-first,

I know that there had been a supporting actor category since the 1930s and Hattie McDaniel had won for an Oscar for portraying a slave in Gone With the Wind. Mr. Hernandez was one of the few actors of color in that period including James Edwards and Frank Silvera, who didn't portray servile characters. He was marvelous in the film and certainly deserved consideration from the Academy for his work.

reply

Yes you make an excellent point, not only a standout for ethnicity, but character also.

Juano Hernandez was a terrific actor whose career may have been hurt by the blacklist. He is also in Breaking Point with John Garfield (a much more faithful version of To Have and Have Not) Last movie I remember him in was the Pawnbroker.

Mr. Hernandez's role as a judge in 1955s Trial is another where he should have been considered in the supporting actor category.

Not everyone can win an Oscar, but a nomination would have been appropriate. On Hernandez's IMDb page, it says he was nominated for a Golden Globe as most promising newcomer. Considering the times and that this wasn't a runaway hit, I'm glad he was at least acknowledged.

I'd like to add the Hernandez is also excellent in Stars in My Crown with Joel MacRea. The trivia section (which isn't always accurate), said MacRea turned down the part of the lawyer. It's too bad if that is so because the one actor I had a problem with was David Brian. It would have stepped up the movie a bit with star power. That's the main thing it lacked for me, also perhaps why the Academy didn't take notice, and why it doesn't have a huge following. I'm glad to see it ranked so highly on IMDb!

Happy viewing,
AB:)
