Horses can smell quicksand?

Anyone know for sure?

reply

I Don' t think he meant "smell" as much as he (the horse) knew the quicksand was there.. Animals can "sense" danger.

reply

Could be that they can identify it somehow, the horse stepped into the edge at least, or could be that the kid was just rationalising why it refused.

Ya, I gotta admit, that was a new one!!!!

I kind of feel the horse could sense their was a dead body in the quicksand which is what spooked him .

That's an awfully good sense of smell. I knew dogs and other animals have strong smell receptors but I never heard it said of a horse. That doesn't mean it's not true. I'm curious so I'll have to research it but not at this particular moment.
