What a nice little movie

I just saw this on TCM last night (recorded it) and it was really great. Janet Leigh was just so gorgeous back then and Robert Mitchum was just so cool. The kid who played Timmy was great as well. A nice little movie for the holidays.

Definitely! Please don't overlook this Christmas classic. It may not be as spectacular as It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, or White Christmas, but it's a sweet little story with a great cast. I watch it every Christmas.

I just saw this for the first time on TCM too and agree with all your points. It's going to be in my Christmas rotation and maybe even a few other times of year.

I also didn't know comparative shoppers were considered criminals back then. Did you?

reply

They weren't criminals, and they're still around today.

What a nice modern movie about a single mother struggling through life even if it was made in 49.

You did end up cheering for one guy or the other and watching this the second time it is a little more complex than you might think.

I personally didn't like the mitchum character so I was not moved by what happened in the end but a solid holiday film.

Add this to wonderful life, the christmas story, home alone and grumpy old men as a holiday staple.

Just for a little spicy pepper flavor to the Christmas meal throw in a post
Christmas viewing of Bad Santa. Or before Christmas if a bunch of good friends
are over and have a broad range for dark humor. Solid satire right from start.
Good wrap up saves the appetitive for some of the more candy Christmas fare.
Beware that it is for the most modern of tastes and moods.
Helps to view holiday life from both sides of the coin.

Holiday Affair is wonderful film in itself. Don't think I've caught the remakes
mentioned here. Those seem to have gotten lesser rankings. Maybe one or other will be shown this season. Be interesting to see whether they played it straight or tweaked the story. To me nothing to tweak but so often that's the
style today, unless just a Hallmark doing the remake with no changes.

It was a great movie all round. Fine acting all round by the leads and great story with multiple elements and can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

What happens next is something you'll have to see for yourself.

You got that right! That court room or Justable scene and what happened
next was OUT THERE!

By the way, great cameo by Harry Morgan!

You don't like Polka, Whatdayamean ya don't like polka?

One of my favorite holiday films. Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh were terrific, and the young man who played Timmy was very cute and adorable.

Cool! I may actually pick it up. At a local grocery store, there are a bunch of Christmas DVDs. Most of them are a quadruple feature. And, for $3.99 or $4.99, even if I only watch it once, I can donate it to charity for someone else to watch.

Plus, what piqued my interest is that Robert Mitchum's character name is the same as a hockey goalie who used to play for our local team.

You know him better as Steve Mason, who now plays goal for the Columbus Blue Jackets!

I agree! I was in the mood for a holiday movie, and don't have many of my own (need to buy some this year!!). So, I rented this one on On Demand last night, and I really like it. I have seen it years ago, but wanted to check it out again. I liked it much more this time...I seemed to get a little more out of it. Very enjoyable!

I have never seen this movie before. All I can say is wow sorry I missed it all these years. A nice quiet movie but well worth watching.

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.

I'm sorry I missed it all these years, too! I'm so grateful we have networks these days that help us get caught up on these gems. When I was growing up it was the same old films year after year (not just referring to the Christmas ones).

It Happened on 5th Avenue is a good Christmas film, too, that I saw for the first time last year. Tonight I saw Remember The Night for the first time and it was a touching film.

Little movie is right. No one talks about it. It doen't even have more than 3000 votes

I want to say I first saw this around maybe 2002, and it has been part of my Christmas schedule as well. I have watched it during various times in December and it is just a gem ready to be discovered by others.
