This Movie iIrritates Me!

When Connie jumps all over Carl for disciplining Timmy for his very bad and insulting tantrum/behavior...I was ready to turn it off! And I must say he was very kind while trying to discipline Timmy. When Timmy got physical, hitting, punching and yelling...I think Carl was just going to put Timmy in his room and close the door.

Timothy was perfectly fine...even with Carl....until his dumb mother brings home that train....and he finds out its not for him...THAT totally influenced his bad behavior! Timmy and Carl seemed to get along just fine as the movie starts and progresses up to the train disappointment. I am glad that Carl finally makes a declaration that he deserves a woman who loves him! I am a big Robert Mitchum, movie fan...but I'm' with Carl on this one!

This movie irritates me too, and I'm on the record on this board saying so. I feel terrible for poor Carl. He was a good, decent man who wanted to take care of Connie and Timmy.

I have never understood why Hollywood is in the habit of casting off the good, decent man in favor of the surly, unemployed, brooding one for the leading lady. Why can't they deal with this like Jane Austen did to perfection in Pride and Prejudice with Darcy and Wickham? Who we thought was good was not, and who we thought was bad was good.

reply

The characters irritated me a bit at several points in the movie. For instance when Carl lit the cigarette in his car near the end of the movie, he then just tosses a bit of trash out the car window into the gutter.

Clearly those were difference times. Even though we still have plenty of people that behave that way, a movie character might not do such a thing if we are expected to respect that character.

reply

Yea, really, I mean I totally GET what you guys are saying......REALLY!

However the one character that IRRITATED ME TO NO END was that dumb seal! I mean what was he doing in the park anyway - besides making a nuisance of himself!

It was all I could do to keep watching after that scene with the seal.

IT JUST TOTALLY RUINED THIS MOVIE FOR ME!!! AND I HATE HOLLYWOOD FOR ALLOWING IT!!!

reply

LOL- you tell 'em, loughsprng. And that toy train got on my nerves, too. Going around in circles. Made me want to punch Timmy's turtles.

reply

Can't. Stop. Laughing.

Seriously.

You two absolutely cracked me up. Thank you 

Everyone in this thread needs to be disciplined by Carl.

HA! The laughs are repaid in full, Ms. Stacy!

Listen I'm on record here! CARL is the only thing that makes this movie worthwhile! He's the ONLY one with good old fashioned values THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TODAY!!!

And I don't know why Hollywood even had Robert Mitchum in this movie! His character adds NOTHING to any scene he's in! He just phones in his performance as usual! And I'm a big Mitchum movie fan too SO MY COMMENT HAS MERIT!!!

HIS LIZARD EYES AND ANTLER NOSE REALLY IRRITATED ME!!!

WHAT COULD CONNIE POSSIBLY SEE IN THIS GUY? She and Timmy HAVE NO FUTURE running off with him!!!

reply

It's hard to say, because I'm making a modern opinion based on a lost era which sadly I was never a part of, but I think Mitchum was miscast. He wasn't particularling charismatic or good looking...at least for me. Except for being intuitive and brutally honest, I didn't get what Connie saw in him.

Of course I was being facetious - and it's all a matter of personal taste.

reply

I kind of got that. That whole lizard eyes and antler nose sort of gave you away .

I believe Mitchum got the role after he was arrested for marijuana possession. They wanted to soften his image by casting him in a romantic role. I agree, he wasn't the best choice.

Seems like seals were part of the Central Park Zoo since the late 1880's...With an upgrade somewhere in the early 30's. Quite an attraction for NYC dwellers. Google the info to make sure I have it right.

Carl is a good and decent man who will find that woman meant for him. If Connie marries him, it will be one-sided love. Carl deserves better than that, doesn't he?

The heart wants what it wants. Mitchum had an earthy wisdom about him. He bought that train for that kid with no money left over. Sure anyone could say it was to impress Connie, but I think he genuinely wanted that boy's happiness.

His boat dream might be a legit career awaiting him. You see inside his shabby apartment his drawn up plans and the boat he had drawn up. The guy was going places! So she followed love. And her boy loved Mitchum, too.

Carl would have turned out fine. While he would have made a fine husband and father to Leigh and the boy, if it is one-sided he's getting a raw deal.

reply

And if Connie marries someone she doesn't really love then she's getting a raw deal too - isn't she?. She obviously felt something for Steve she didn't feel for Carl.

Why is that wrong?

From your perspective...You probably see that there is nothing wrong...And maybe it isn't; but for me... I didn't like it. You make a good point though about Mitchum's character buying the train for the kid to be happy...And I hadn't thought of that. On the other hand....Why didn't Timmy's mother just ask Carl to get the train for her son for Christmas? Better yet...Why didn't Carl think to do that himself? But...Then again...That would've been my script...Lol!
