How did Francis obtain all that military intelligence about where the Japs were, and what they were about to do?

Frances was a U.S. Army mule (he was wearing the official "U.S." bridle). Why was he always wandering around in the jungle alone, rather than being worked or in a corral or stable?

How did Peter get the Army to let him have or buy Francis after the war?

How can a young guy who works as a bank teller afford not only a house, but the stabling, feeding, and veterinary upkeep of a mule?
