Why was it necessary for Neil's character to get hurt?

There was some sort of plan there but I still don't get why she had to be injured. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks! This proves it's an old fashioned movie, more recently, in the movies and TV at least, this makes the investigators suspicious in itself.
