Well motion pictures or not, she was too old for the part.....or more bluntly, didn't look sexy enough to be the type of girl she was supposed to be.

reply

AGREED.

and that soft filter they kept using on her shots was thicker than pea soup -- holy crap.

You haven't been around very many carnivals/midways, have you? They generally do not have nymphets. The majority look like ladies who have been around the block and back again. In most movies, they have them looking like fantasy girls. At least in this film, they looked like "shopworn angels".

I think Joan was perfect because she gives that world-weary look when required, women who have been through a lot and show some of the effects. A "girly-girl" just wouldn't have worked. If she was some fresh-faced girl, it wouldn't be so stressful to be told to move on or to fit in the places she does.

Throughout my 60+ years, I've been to a lot of midways. It always seemed that these shows were on the far edge. I swear that many of them use the same song: "Raunchy"! Parents always tell the children, "Don't look over there." My sister and I decided that the "ladies" looked very tired and bored. But, there was always a gathering of men of all ages.
