One of John Wayne's best side kicks

Besides Walter Brennan as Stumpy...
I loved Oliver Hardy in this film. Best scene is when the fiddle showdown was staged.
second... Oliver Hardy's "puttin' away hat"
I wish these two could have been together more!

No, his *BEST* sidekick.

I lie to everybody, what makes you so special?

I liked Arthur Hunnicutt, who played Bull in "El Dorado".

reply

Aurtur Hunnicutt is another one who I wished was in more Wayne movies.
,,,also great in The Last Command as Davy Crockett

When the legend becomes a fact... print the legend.

I agree with the selection of Oliver Hardy. I also liked Gabby Hayes as the Duke's sidekick in, "Tall in the Saddle", one of my all time favourite John Wayne westerns.

reply

Wayne thought so much of Hardy's ability that he tried to convice Hardy to become his permanent comic foil. However, since this would have meant the end of Laurel and Hardy, the comedian graciously declined.

I loved their dialogue in this movie. Like, for instance, that scene in the deserted surveyor's cabin, where Marie Windsor (as "Annie Logan") wants to talk to John Breen (Wayne) alone.

WILLIE: I'll go see to the horses."

ANNIE: "Your friend is very polite."

BREEN: "My friend, ma'am, is a Kentuckian!"

As in, if you look up "polite" in the dictionary, you see a picture of any male person from the Bluegrass State. ;-)

I think that Gabby Hayes in 'Tall In The Saddle' was John Wayne's best sidekick. Although Oliver Hardy did well in this one it's still old Gabby who looks more comfortable in westerns.
