The ending confused the heck out of me

I couldn't tell if Pat O'Brien was a good guy or a bad guy in the apartment scene where Ella Raines was hiding around the corner. It seemed like he was in cahoots with Roland Winters until the final fracas. And did George Raft go back to being a cop or did he remain a bail bondsman?

It was left open at the end of the film which profession Raft went back to since Backus and O'Brien were still arguing over that one. O'Brien was definitely not involved with the villains nor the crime, but he was rather ineffectual (and in out of his depth) at the climax of the film. His character was shown throughout the film as a successful businessman who was honest but opportunistic. His character was not used to the rough stuff. He was driving the car at the end because he had little alternative except to be shot. The other characters had guns.....

I think Raft went back to being a bondsman. O'Brien took his buyout money back and told Backus he was giving Raft 30% of the business - up from 20% - as the two has discussed earlier in the film.
