extreme picture contrast

caught the last half hour of this on tv last night and was impressed with the very high contrast between the black and white, just wondering if anyone knows anything about this, was it intended, or was it a really lousy print, looked great anyway.
i was just wondering.

If you still care it was due to John Alton's cinematography. He was one of film noir's greatest cinematographers.

On TCM last night, Robert Osborn said John Alton stated, "It is not what you light that counts but what you don't light!"
