Richard Long about to give his girl a backhand

Was it just a sign of the times regarding Richard Long raising his hand to his girl in the dining room when she didn't want to reciprocate his affections? Slapping girls around seemed to be looked at little too casually back in the "good old days". I wasn't around at that time. Just wondering.

And it happens plenty in movies from the forties in particlar. The oddest thing about it, though (except for how hilariously it's usually choreographed), is that it never seemed to be a big deal for the dames, nor for the guys that did the slapping, as if it's someting very natural that might not happen often, but isn't unexpected when it does.
Anyway, I think that in the context of the film the guy was just kidding and didn't actually intend to go through with it.

I saw this film on January 20, 2017, first day of San Francisco's Noir City. During that scene, you could hear the sharp intake of the breath of the entire audience of 800 or so.

He was kidding. He had no intention of actually hitting her, or for her to think that he would. That's why she immediately gave in to him instead of flinching or becoming angry.
