There are two characters who had a connection with the Nuns' home in Normandy,France. Luigi Rossi's son was killed in Normandy and was one of the 'unidentified'. It was after this revelation / interchange with the Nuns that Mr Rossi agrees to donate the land. The other person with a connection to the Nuns' hometown is Mr Masen {Marlow}. I don't remember the first time it ls mentioned but we do learn Mr Masen was there during WWII. We definitely know the connection when Mr Masen and company are around his piano listening to one of the women sing Masen's latest creation. After she completes the song the group can hear the Nuns singing, off in the distance, a tune with the same melody as Masen's song. It turns out the Nuns were singing a 'Gregorian Chant' hundreds of yrs old and Masen unconsciously retained the tune while in France for his song.

In end Masen agrees to say a prayer in the chapel. It is the final sequence that the audience realizes Mr Masen decided not to be the last stumbling block in the way of the Nuns' quest to build the hospital. It is assumed Masen donates the property he aquired.
