Beautifully filmed...

I have always thought the photography and lighting on this film was magnificent.

Of course, the subject matter, (aka Ava Gardener and Robert Taylor, so beautiful and so handsome), helped very much ;)

But, the light peeking through the blinds, the ceiling fans circling above, the lighting of the actors, it was all so beautifully done...

It's one of my favorite pictures to sigh over...so very romantic...

I just saw this for the first time. LOVED this movie! Ava Gardner was ridiculously hot. Great plot, great characters. And yes, the cinematography during the climax, amongst the fireworks, was incredible.

Was she not the most beautiful woman? The scenes with her and Taylor in the moonlight, especially, and she doesn't seem to have a bit of makeup on.

It is one of those little seen, underrated movies of the forties.

Strangely enough, while made for 800,000$, it was treated as a 'B'picture by MGM. Back in the days it got poor to mixed reviews.

Fortunately its reputation has gotten better through the years: in 'dead man don't wear plaid' (Carl Franklin) there is a nice tribute to this (almost) forgotten film noir!
Cinematogaphy and performances were outstanding!!!

I agree with everything written. The only think that would have made it even more perfect would have been to have filmed it in color. That scenery would have been beautiful.

It would have been nice had it been filmed in color, but noir type films weren't filmed in color for purposes of mood. Not in 1949.

Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies

... for mood, and because B/W is cheaper to process.

[Edit: colour would have altered this film utterly, and not for the better, I think.]

I definitely agree with this.

It's a solid film overall, but it deserves a higher rating for how well made (and especially well acted) it is.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I just moved into my very first home of my own...Just yesterday, standing at the sink washing dishes and looking into my livingroom, I realized I have a dark bronze ceiling fan, palm trees in the corners and and "up light" under the palms...lol -- just like in "The Bribe"!....

I guess I've made my fantasy come true and didn't realize I was doing it. ;) And why not? ;)

Now...where's Robert Taylor?? ;)
