Once Again, Laughton Saves a Film

In a list of the top 5 male actors in Hollywood history, how could anyone not include Charles Laughton? For me, his performance saved this film. I'm not sure there is a true dud out there with Laughton in it. Without him, this film would have been insuffrable.

I would agree, though I would also add that the presence of Vincent Price really helped this film out as well, not to mention teaming Price and Laughton as the film's villains.

Yes, Laughton's performance is great and by far the most nuance out of the whole cast. However, I would say that Vincent Price was just as good as Laughton. (You can never go wrong with Price as a villain anyway.) As for Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner, their performances are really nothing memorable (Ava's beauty IS mesmerizing, though), but they were good enough.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Maybe hard to believe but at one time, when he was starting in movies in his mid twenties, Robert Taylor was more beautiful than Ava Gardner is here in The Bribe. This was 13 years before in Camille, before his face hardened up experiencing the service he saw in World War II -- much like Tyrone Power.
