I read your post with tears in my eyes (by the way, I found no fault in your English), because I too saw it at about 12 years old and the Brooke Shields version sucks.
But good news (I think) I searched further and a lady in England has it for $5 plus $5. I trust her more than the guy, because she has qualified for Paypal.

We reacted as you did, and have been searching for years for the original.
I will let you know address as soon as I receive and review the dvd. Take hope; even if the ignoranti keep pushing the inferior version (star still alive, after all) if I am successful I will share the wealth! That was such a classy film.

It's on Youtube in 10 parts. We watched it last night. The colors are a bit pale and there is one tracking incident (this was recorded from TV), but no frozen scenes, so it was a delight to finally have a chance to watch this 1949 version :)!
