Location for Hotel - Gardens - Pools in Tehuacán

Some movie fans in later years have wondered about the location for these scenes. Beginning at about 34 minutes into the film. These scenes were filmed at the Hotel Peñafiel, which is no longer in business as a hotel. Currently in use as a university, Universidad Euroamericana. Located at map coordinates 18 o 28' 53" N by 97 o 24' 02" W. You can go to these coordinates on Google Earth, transition to Street View and still see the buildings on the west side of the road. Part of the pool may still be seen but not as depicted in the movie. After all, things can change in going on 70 years. This area is famous for mineral water, there is a large water plant next door to the north and at one time, there was an owner relationship between the hotel and one of the water moguls.

Although not one of the greats, this is one of my favorite movies to watch for pure pleasure. The 1935 Buick convertible that Jane Greer rents is well-worn after 14 years in Mexico. Actually, they used at least two different but nearly identical cars in the film. You can tell this if you look at the inside rear view mirror on the windshield. I guess this has been the routine for years; I watched "Rockford Files" being filmed in Seal Beach, CA, one day and they had a car carrier loaded with six identical gold Pontiac Firebirds.

Look for Arturo Soto Rangel in this film. He was the old guy putting gasoline in Patric Knowles' rented 1941 Mercury; Knowles drove off without paying him. Rangel had a role in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" as the town mayor who oversaw the sale of burros to the three prospectors.
