Was Leighton handed a joint in his foxhole, sure had a funny look on his face.

reply

I think so because his vision was immediately blurred.

No, I'm pretty sure he was just handed a cigarette. If you remember earlier in the film Layton was offered a cigarette but he turned it down and said he didn't smoke. When he finally decided to have a smoke he got a funny look on his face and the camera unfocused and then refocused. I think they did this to show that it was his first cigarette because some people get dizzy or light-headed the first time they smoke a cigarette.

I smoked one cigarette about 45 years ago. I got dizzy, and yes, my vision blurred for a coupla seconds.

"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

It was a cigarette.

And like Donnie Wahlberg's "Carwood Lipton" character in Band of Brothers, he 'didn't smoke' either until the stress of the siege of Bastogne got to him.
