Why is Robin's cape black?

Insofar as I can remember in the comics, Robin's cape was always yellow so why is it in this serial it's black? Or if it isn't black, why is it dark? Because if memory serves, in the first serial The Batman, Robin's cape was yellow.

reply

Robin's cape was only ever black when Tim Drake came around, and even then it was only on the outside...so, I dunno.

reply

I'm just guessing, but I suspect that a yellow cape would have appeared whitish, blending into the lighter backgrounds, and being too obvious in the darker scenes.

Or, maybe there was a shortage of yellow fabric during the war, and black was cheap?

(This is posted for entertainment. Don't get upset.)

maybe it has something to do with the fact that these are low budget BLACK AND WHITE serials and a yellow cape wouldn't show up as well as a black one??

I was black because its a black & white serial! How could you tell it was yellow in the first serial when the film was in black & white?

Actually, it depended on whether you saw the VHS version of the first Batman serial or the updated version which came out a few years ago in a limited edition. In the VHS version, they edited out the racial slurs that were in the original and substituted voice overs. However everything else was the same. Still black and white and not edited. The distributors realized that with so many fans used to seeing the color TV versions, they would have to make some changes to the DVD version. If you wanted the limited edition copy, you paid about $20 more. The DVD came in an vividly illustrated box which contained capsules of hashish and marijuana. You were instructed to take this right before the movie. That way, even though the print was black and white, you saw Robin's cape in bright yellow...or purple..or any color you choose If you look closely at the emblem on Batman's chest, you can actually see the bat flap his wings. Unfortunately, the DEA found out what was going on and they closed the distributor down. Why don't you check it out on Ebay...who knows..you might get lucky.

It has been over a year since I posted this comment on why wasn't Robin's cloak yellow in the old serial. The obvious answer was that it was a black and white film and the color yellow would not stand out. But if you read my comment about the DVD being sold with a hallucinagin drug so that the viewer could see the emblem on Batman's chest flap its wings, you would have guessed that this old dude was messing with you kids. I would have thought somebody would have come back with a smart ass remark. Boy are you guys dense!!

it's because black and white has no contrast the firsts two seasons of the adventurers of superman george reeves wore grey and red-brown could of been 3 seasons even.

Most likely because it was filmed in 'black & white'?

Yea but in the 1st Batman serial Robin Look's to have a yellow Cape i mean they could have used the same color that they used in the 1st serial to make it look like he has yellow then again it didn't bother me that his cape was not yellow in this serial. I think it had more to do with Bob Kane cause he had a lot of saying in this serial and always looked at robin as a younger batman so i guess he figured why not give them the same color cape this Serial Batman Forever and Batman: The Animated Series are the only three wear Robin's cape is Black that i know of also it should be Noted that Robin's Costume in this Serial was Maroon and Green.
