Perhaps like me you wondered about the significance of the particular Noh play featured by Ozu as it may relate to the narrative structure and theme ...

I came here specifically to ask if the subject of the Noh play had any special significance. It seems understanding the play's themes is essential to understanding Noriko's reaction. I didn't expect such a comprehensive answer to be waiting for me! Thanks very much, that's an excellent link.
