Anyone prefer this to Tokyo Story?

Though most people consider Tokyo Story to be Ozu's masterpiece, and it is by all means a very well made and important film, but I found Late Spring to be more touching. It touches a very interesting area of the human relationship. It could be because I'm from China, where the theme of Tokyo Story, the parents-children relationship, have been explored and adapted into so many films and tv series that by the time I saw TS, I did not feel what many other westerners felt. As for LS, I found the whole idea very refreshing. also, incredible performances by the two leads.

Anyone else?

I agree with you. There were very good moments in Tokyo Story, but the final scene in Late Spring, and the scene in which the daughter is about to go to her wedding, are heartbreaking.

I found Late Spring more engaging than Tokyo Story. I love the way Late Spring creeps up on you. It starts out like a simple soap opera, and by the end you feel like you've really been through a heartbreaking experience with the characters.

I also prefer Late Spring. While Tokyo Story always ranks at or near the top of 'Greatest Films' lists, I've noticed recently that Late Spring is also moving up into the top group.

They are both terrific films, but I prefer Late Spring as well.

As much as I adore Tokyo Story, Late Spring is better.

I think both "Tokyo Story" and "Late Spring" are extraordinary masterpieces. But if you were to ask me which one I found the most effective, I would have to say "Late Spring." A movie has not made me cry that hard in such a long time. That final image of the father, sitting alone in a quiet house, peeling the appleā€¦it's an image I will never forget. And that's just one scene; everything that comes before that is also solid gold. A masterpiece, one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I don't think I can choose. They're both among my very favourite films.

This is like Sophie's choice. I cannot really pick between them as both are among the greatest films ever made in movie history.

Maybe someone can explain this to me. I love Ozu, he's one of my favorite directors. I would argue that Late Spring, Floating Weeds and An Autumn Afternoon are all masterpieces. However, ive never understood all the love for Tokyo Story. Ive tried watching it multiple times and I find it boring and unengaging, and it also doesn't speak to me on an emotional level at all.
