Did anyone who's read the book like this a lot?

I thought it was OK. The casting was good, but I just didn't really like the movie. The book is tied for my favorite ever, though. I guess there's just too much skipping around and they almost entirely neglect Jack Burden as a character. Plus, they change Stark's last words, which makes no sense to me.

I thought it was good, but I can't see it being one of the greatest ever in the eyes of anyone who's read the book.

Great book, good movie. I'd like to see somebody make a great movie out of it.

i absolutely agree. the book was a masterpiece. this was prety hokey and simplistic and dated, and jumped all over the place capricously. The one standout element was Mercedes Mccabridge, who was excellent. Best Picture? yeesh.

People never seem to realize that not only is it to be expected that a movie will 'skip' (they are making a movie not a miniseries) certain stuff, BUT IT IS NECESSARY. It would be a bad film otherwise.
Novel and films are two completely and utterly different mediums. Stop judging them by the same standards.

It's my favorite novel and while I think the movie is not close to being as good as the book that's not unexpected. The book is so big that it would have to be a miniseries to encompass everything.

The movie told the story of Willie Start through the eyes of Jack Burden. But the book is about Jack's journey. The Cass Mastern story is completely missing as is Jack's trip where he discovers the 'Great Twitch'. And the dirt on the judge takes a lot longer for Jack to discover than it did in the movie.

I can't think of more than a handful of movies that I liked better than the book (The Natural comes to mind) so while this version falls short of the novel it is way better than the Sean Penn version.

agent, i do realize that. It was a great book, and a disappointing movie. That's all.
