This film is always timely

The themes in this movie still hold up extremely well today. That is why it is an enduring classic. Willie Stark reminds me of so many of today's politicians. It is a bit frightening to think how many politicians are so much like him.

This film doesn't say that all politicians are evil. It simply says we need to be very careful about who we follow. It says we should never just follow like sheep, we need to investigate and raise questions. Unfortunately, so many people follow politicians blindly, never questioning their integrity.

So many politicians put on a front, tell the people what they want to hear. This doesn't help anybody. It just serves the politician's personal gain.

Good points. Also, we don't know who will in fact do something to help us, even if they pull things to get elected. This movie shows Stark did help the people, but I guess 'power corrupts.'

I agree. I was watching last night and with the 2012 election so close, I thought about the lack of change in core values of political power in the last 60 years. The technology changes but the human frailities and temptations don't.

Even with the advent of 24/7 coverage and internet, the politicians will say one thing to one group and contradict the next day. In 1949, this easier to accomplish.

The gullibility of the electorate has not changed much either-if anything, it has gotten worse. The 'hicks' described in this movie are replaced now with dumbed down people who have a short attention span. Substance or appearance of substance back then has been replaced with sound bites.

This movie also made me ponder the ruthlessness required to obtain high political office than as well as now. I think that many people have a hard time realizing that most if not all high level politicians have resorted to ruthless behaviour at one or more points in their career-at least many of us don't want to admit it.

I suppose that politics has always been a rough and ruthless endeavor all the way back to the beginning of governance.............and it probably always will be.

^^Good points. But at least we still have our Constitution!

reply

Yes.....we still have the Constitution. But what we don't have is the quality of character and moral compass of the leaders. The Consitution is still there but the other piece of the puzzle is long gone.

reply

Yes, it's true. I was thinking this while watching the film. The film actually holds up after all these years.
