Was TVs Lone Ranger an fool too??

I watched some of The Lone Ranger the Disney move, and I only made it about 15 mins. In part because I usually like my heros to not act completely idiot, also Johhny Depps performance was okay but I had seen it before when he was a pirate.
So anyway, I thought I knew the basic story of TLR but, I started arguing with my sister/best friend about whether the original Lone Ranger was such a fool! So anyway I have never watched this show, i before my time,

Dang App, on my phone! Anyways, I just wanted to ask if the character of 'The Lone Ranger' on the old school tv show, was he kinda stupid?

reply

That's why most of us who are fans of the REAL Lone Ranger will not watch the movie. We love the Lone Ranger and Clayton Moore as The Lone Ranger, Jay Silverheels as Tonto. The Lone Ranger is wonderful, he taught values, he taught the way life should be! Check it out!! KAS

I agree with shotgunsalli in that Clayton Moore is the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels is Tonto. John Hart did a good job in one season as The Lone Ranger but by then the fans identified Clayton Moore as the real Long Ranger and so far it is the case today.

reply

I'm sorry, but I just can't agree that Jon Hart did a good job as The Lone Ranger. The one thing he DID do well was to disprove the producers' idea that they could "put anyone behind the mask and they could play The Lone Ranger". The one (and thankfully) only season in which Hart played The Masked Man handily disproves THAT idea! Clayton Moore was the ONLY REAL Lone Ranger on TV. Period. End of story.

Stotgunsalli, I so couldn't agree with you more. The fact that The Lone Ranger taught values is the best part of the whole show, not to mention that he always got the criminals, and justice was served

As TV Tropes pointed out, Tonto could have done better on his own than the Ranger could have done on his own, but Clayton Moore's Ranger clearly knew that. Not a lot of mutual respect and friendship between whites and Indians on TV back then, but it was always evident here.

As portrayed in the TV series, and on radio, based on various recording I have heard, the Ranger was quite intelligent and quickly figured out who he could not trust, and ploys to catch the bad guys.

One could claim him to be a fool in one way, however. Repeatedly, he would have the bad guy walk right in front of him, giving him a chance to knock the gun out of the Rangers' hand and start a fist fight. There were scores of fistfights on the series, and some of them could have been prevented by the Ranger being more careful in getting the bad guys to lie on the floor/ground quicker or keeping a safer distance when ordering them to go somewhere while he walked behind the crook(s).

Overall, I cannot imagine anyone saying that he was a fool, overall, after watching the series. It did not change, by the way, depending on whether it was Clayton Moore or John Hart. Hart played the character virtually the same, only with a deeper voice.

The Disney move should have been called "Tonto" with his sidekick "the Masked Man."

BTW has anybody seen the porn film "The Long Ranger?"

reply

I absolutely hated the movie making Tonto the brains, never taking off that awful make-up, and knowing that Indians only wear such make-up for a war run. Ad don't even get me started on Jon Hart. He did another series, but I hardly remember it. Anyway, he was BORRRRINNNG in the part and his voice alone was wrong for the masked man.

I was pretty disgusted by the Disney movie. Ironically, in about the last 30 to 40 minutes, the movie and The Lone Ranger actually started being good. Johnny Depp was ok. I liked his character better after they explained his story later on in the movie. The villain was very good. It is really disappointing the way they ruined the movie, because if they had made a sequel as good as the train action sequence at the end of this movie, it would be great.

There's a scene in the Disney movie where the Lone Ranger is dragged through a pile of manure.

I think that about sums up how well they adapted the character and his story.
