Yes, you could say that. Where are you, Alan? If you're in Region 2, there's a nice BFI edition, if you're in the US you'll have to wait for Criterion to get to it.

I'm in the U.S., pal, so I'll just hafta be patient and wait for Criterion.

Or check your local library for a copy on VHS. My library has such a copy randomly.

I was just about to mention this! It's definitely a noir-ish film, much of a thriller than Drunken Angel. I think The Bad Sleep Well is another one of Kurosawa's under-appreciated films.

kurosawa's high and low is film noir too. its on criterion

reply

High Low, is one of my top 5 noir films. All I ever watch is noir, french gangster & some nouvelle vague. Hitchcock/Melville/Goddard/Wilder

reply

Definitely not as much so as The Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog, or even High and Low. Not every film with a criminal is a noir though.

Just what I thought. It is / was on IFC last night and possibly during the month. I dvr'ed it. I had the same impressions as others, I think. A very NOT OLD Mifune. And mos def NEW-R. That's noir for most people.

I have seen high and low. This strikes me as more noir than that one. Have not seen the others mentioned. This one's shot more darkly and starkly than High and Low. It just looks more noir.

Non-Samurai. Nice. Not dissing those either. Seppuku was one of the best films of all. Talk about a horror story. You can't think up stories that horrid if you're not Japanese!

Actually, with the likes of Drunken Angel, Stray Dog and High And Low under his belt, Kurosawa looks like one of the very best film noir directors. Up there with Robert Siodmak and Fritz Lang as far as I´m concerned.

I'd say Stray Dog is even more in that kind of territory, and certainly the better one between the two.
