So this film does not yet have a Region 1 release? That will explain the lack of actvity on this board and the number of votes, I've just watched the Region 2 version over here in the UK, I'm suprised we have a realease but you guys do not, oh well, hope you all enjoy it, and let us have a good discussion once you have seen it!

I wonder why they released the short version. IMDB has USA time listed as 104 and says there is a 150 min directors cut. But the Dvd is 98 min.

I have just watched the Criterion Edition of Drunken Angel, and I must say that I am disappointed in this transfer, especially since it is Criterion. Too many times there are vertical lines running down the frame of the film. This is especially disconcerting during an emotional close-up of Takashi Shimura near the end of the film. Although this may be the best available print of the film, it seems to me that with today's technology in film restoration, a better transfer could have been achieved.

I agree. The vertical lines are disconcerting. I wonder if they werent on a tight budget for this release? Most other criterion DVDs I have are state of the art in terms of transfer. Though it is not unwatchable, it is below the level of quality I expect from them. Especially given the price premium!
