It's fun to compare ths with 'Red Beard' - another Kurosawa doctor movie

"Red Beard" is the more widely known of the two movies, but it is fun nevertheless to compare the two movies. In "Drunken Angel," Toshiro Mifune's character questions Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura. In "Red Beard," - made some 17 years later - Takashi Shimura's character cynically questions the doctor, played by Toshiro Mifune.

Both movies are great. And amidst all the pathos found in both movies, there are sparks of great humor and wit that really stand out.

Yes, but Akahige is almost tract and Drunken Angel is not. It's the movie that almost got away from Kurosawa because of Mifune's epic charismatic performance.

(I love Akahige, btw.)

Give them the respect they deserve.
