Scene in which Matsunaga broke open the wood box to see his body inside

Did this remind anybody of the scene in Empire Strikes Back where Luke fights the imaginary Vader, kills him, then the mask explodes and Luke sees his own face inside it? I know George Lucas was a huge Kurosawa fan and Star Wars was inspired by Kurosawa. I thought this scene was also inspiration.

I never thought of that. Lucas certainly was heavily influenced by Kurosawa, so this thinking may not be as far off.

Kurosawa would use this idea again in KAGEMUSHA, this time happening to Tatsuya Nakadai.

I can say with almost 100% certainty that the scene you are referring to was an homage to Kurosawa.

reply

I always thought it was a reference to a similar scene from Kagemusha. I could be wrong, though.

I'm not going there to die. I'm going to find out if I'm really alive.

reply

Um... Yoidore Tenshi, 1948, Kagemusha, 1980. You could well be wrong. Sorry.

reply

They came out the same year (Empire Strikes Back and Kagemusha) and Lucas helped fund that film and saw it in production, so it could very well be a reference.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about Yoidore Tenshi. You mean the Empire scene is an homage to Kagemusha? Could be; nice idea.

reply

That was what I meant. Sorry if I confused you. It makes sense... George Lucas was basically the ultimate Kurosawa fanboy.

Masters of the amusing wipe. Yes indeed.

Yes, it absolutely reminded of that scene... But the one in Empire was just far enough removed from the one from this film that I thought it may have been coincidental.
