Where is Toshiro Mifune?

When I first started watching the film I kept wondering when Mifune would show up. Then I realized that young guy with the slicked back hair WAS Toshiro Mifune!
Dang he looks completely different!
I didnt realize it was him until he did the typical Mifune grunt.
Anyone else have the same experience?

Not with this film, but the first time I ever saw "The Bad Sleep Well", I had a hard time noticing him, at first.

Still looks like Mifune to me, but he is a lot younger in this one. I think he plays a great Yakuza with a misplaced sense of justice, with that face of his.

" but he is a lot younger in this one"

This was just two years before Rashomon.

In Stray Dog (1949) he looked even younger

I had no idea it was him either, just shows what an amazing actor he was

The first time I saw the film I did not know that the doctor was Takashi Shimura. I think I knew which character Mifuni played and I had previously seen Stray Dog (where Mifuni was also very young), so I knew who he was right away.

I knew it was him. Originally I had been used to seeing him in samurai movies, but now i've seen several of his modern-setting movies and I could recognize him. You should see the other ones. "The Bad Sleep Well", "High and Low", and "Stray Dog" are all amazing films.
