What is her place in the household or family.

No, she's only a year older than Laura. Maybe some poor relation who was orphaned and grew up with Laura.

In the book, she is Laura's half-sister, as is Anne (illegitimate).

In the movie, she's Laura's maternal first cousin (their mothers were sisters) while Ann is Laura's paternal first cousin.
