John Hoyt as Stacy Grant

The most fascinating aspect of this movie is the obviously gay character, Stacy Grant, played subtly and brilliantly by John Hoyt. How the 1948 Production Code let this character stand "as is" in the final cut of the film is astonishing. Stacy Grant may be the first honestly-portrayed gay male character in American film, as opposed to the sissified comic-relief characters usually served up by Franklin Pangborn and Grady Sutton. Whenever I watch this movie, it's only to see Hoyt's scenes with Janis Paige and Bette Davis. The rest of it is a crashing bore, relieved only by the nicely presented atmosphere of post-war New York City.
